Bombs on St Albans - World War II

While it is outside the period covered by this site some of you may be interested to see where bombs fell during the blitz of London between October 1940 and June 1941. The above comes from the Bomb Site map. The map covers parts of southern Hertfordshire as far north as St Albans.

    I saw a very large crater in a wooded area close to farmland in the Wheathampstead - Ayot St.Lawrence area; is this from WW2 does anyone know?

      You don't give a grid reference or any numeric estimate of size. However pits dug for chalk or brick earth are occur over most of the chalk associated with the Chiltern Hills. Many have been filled in but undoubtedly some remain - and that is the most likely explanation for something looking like a bery large crater.
