Six Post Card Views of Baldock in 1903

Baldock Church
Valentine Cards can usually be dated by their numbers and in 1903 a photographer took a number of photographs of Baldock. So far I have definitely identified 6 different views (some in different formats).but gaps in the numbering suggest there may be more.
All available in High Resolution by clicking on the image

Update of Hertfordshire Photographers & Post Card Publishers

One of the activities that is slowly continuing is the update of information on Victorian  photographers in Hertfordshire and also early post card publishers.  In the last couple of months changes have been made to the following pages - ranging from a revised date to new examples of their work and additional biographical information. Some of the pages are "work pages" in that when I get perhaps half a dozen references I will then consider adding biographical details.

Pages with Updates
George Avery (1839-1911) of Hitchin (1864-1870) & Kent
John Barnard (1841-1894) of St Albans (1878-1894)
Athelstane Basebe (1853-1909) of Hertford, Hemel Hempstead & Watford (and elsewhere)
Ernest Bedwell of Bedford - Bedwell & Bedford Series of Hertfordshire post cards circa 1903/4
Percy Alex Buchanan - School posts cards nationally (Also Photo Tourists Association)
Michael Chadwick of Tring - post card publisher
Atlas Church (father & son) of St Albans (c1881) and London
Julianna Dunn (1853-1935), photographer of Hemel Hempstead (c1886-c1916)
Thomas Benwell Latchmore (1832-1908) and son of Hitchin from 1864
Daniel Barton Skillman, post card publisher of Harpenden of Herpenden
J J & W F Southwood of Watford (c1900-c1930)
Valentine of Dundee - dated example of Hertfordshire post cards

Baron Rothschild's Staghounds - Pictures by J T Newman

Hunting
Lord Rothchild's Staghounds on the Chiltern Hills
I have updated the page on Hunting in Hertfordshire by adding four post cards, taken by the photographer J. T. Newman of Berkhamsted. They show the staghounds run by Baron Rothschild of Tring Park. All were published in about 1905. Interestingly one was published by the national post card publisher, Valentine, in their "hunting series".

Valentine Cards of Hemel Hempstead

Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead
Valentine published a large number of post cards of Hertfordshire. Not only are most of their cards numbered but they published many of the cards in different formats at different dates. Triggered by a request of high resolution images of several of the post cards of Hemel Hempstead I decided to produce high resolution scans of all the Valentine cards of Hemel Hempstead and district (Apsley, Boxmoor and Bovingdon) I currently have (see menu of all cards added), together with details of their backs. This has been done on an experimental basis and there is no plan to extend this to all Valentine cards in the immediate future. However work has been scheduled to update the layout of the information on Hemel Hempstead.

Dating Valentine Post Cards

Large Image
I recently purchased a post card of Hatfield House which was photographed in 1886. And how do I know? The card was published by Valentine & Sons, Dundee, and was numbered 6470 - the number being the negative number.  St Andrews University have a major post card archive, and have produced a list relating the post card number and the date the negative was taken.

I am building a list of numbered Hertfordshire post cards and if you know of other numbered Valentine cards I would love to add details to my list.

I have now (February 2013) set up an illustrated list of the Valentine cards I have of Hemel Hempstead, with higher resolution images of the cards and also information on their backs as part of some research to get a better understanding of what the publisher was doing at what dates.
