Jon tells me that the St Albans & Herts Arch & Arch Society have just put an annotated transcript of the St Albans City Archives (based on a catalogue produced by William Le Hardy in the 1940s, the documents themselves now in the archives at HALS.
It is clear that there is much historically important information in these records, and if you are planning to come to Hertfordshire to research documents related to the city, and the people who lived there you should start by looking at the introductory page - and then download the catalogue.
