Herts at War Exhibition. Last chance to visit it at Letchworth

Herts at War

Dan Hill reports:  This coming week is the final week [in Letchworth] of what has been a fantastic year and one that the entire team are incredibly proud of. Over this last year we have welcomed over 10,000 visitors to the exhibition, led outreach sessions for thousands of students, researched over 700 Hertfordshire servicemen for family members and attended many events reaching members of the public across the county. With the support of our key project partners at the Heritage Lottery Fund and Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation we feel that the task that we set out to achieve in 2013; raising awareness of the Great War locally and remembering those who fought 100 years ago, had been a real success. 

For anyone wishing to visit the exhibition this week before we prepare for our September 9th launch in Sawbridgeworth; We will be open from 10am - 4pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 12/14 The Arcade, Letchworth Garden City, Herts, SG6 3ET.

WW1 Tapestry from Napsbury at St Albans Museum

Just a quick note to warn you that the excellent WW1 Exhibition at St Albans Museum  "Keep the Home Fires Burning" finishes on 14th November. There is still time to see this wonderful tapestry of military badges made by soldiers in Napsbury Military Hospital and also the Memorial Window from the Folly Chapel at Wheathampstead.

A week ago I visited Letchworth Garden City and was very interested to see the Herts at War Exhibition.

The exhibition was opened at 11 am on 4th August by the

Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, the Countess of Verulam.

A musical interlude was provided by the

The centre of the exhibition was dominated by a series of about 40 excellent display panels, such as the example shown here.

To one side there were tables and further panels relating tho those who did not come back - with about half a dozen volumes of biographies of individual servicemen, with pictures were available.

Another series of panels showed document from the war - including photocopies of a large number of letters sent from the front to the family in Bushey.

There were two display with original artifacts on display at the opening which I suspect, for security reasons will not be in the full exhibition.

One was an imanagitive project relating to the war put together by pupils at St Margaret's School.

The other, accompanied by two soldiers in contemporary uniforms, was a display of weapons and other kit of the type used at the Front. 

There was also a book on sale "Bushey During the Great War 1914-1918" published by the Bushey Museum Trust (ISBN 978-0-9511145-4-4) which I will be reviewing later this month.

There are also a number of interesting sounding events to accompany the exhibition during August.

The Trustees of Bushey Museum, and their enthusiastic helpers need to be congratulated on such a well planned and comprehensive exhibition - and they have set a high standard for other towns and villages in Hertfordshire to follow.

On Thursday I visited the British Schools Museum at Hitchin with a party from the Genealogy Group of the Tring U3A. I had previously visited the Museum in 2010 and have added a report of the latest visit to the earlier report.

The visit was well timed as the Museum had just opened an exhibition on the First World War. Only days earlier they unveiled a war memorial in one of the classrooms with the names and regiments of the pupils who had lost their lives in the conflict. In addition the book Remembered with Pride, by Jean M Handley has been published - and gives detailed biographies and war time histories of the casualties.

WW1 Memorial Window from Folly Methodist Chapel, Wheathampstead

This memorial window can currently be seen as part of the Keeping the Home Fires Burning exhibition (until 16th November 2014) at the Museum of St Albans. 

The names are:
